Their primary function is not to directly support the load of the conveyor belt like trough rollers or return rollers, but to clean the underside of the conveyor belt by removing sticky or abrasive materials that may adhere to the conveyor belt after unloading. It is usually used in conjunction with a conveyor belt scraper, or as a replacement for it.
Parallel comb rollers have unique cleaning functions:
Comb design: Comb rollers are not smooth cylindrical rollers, but are composed of a series of closely spaced parallel discs or rings (similar to the teeth of a comb). These discs are usually made of durable materials such as wear-resistant steel or wear-resistant rubber.
Rotary motion: Comb rollers are located directly under the conveyor belt, usually on the return side, so that the conveyor belt contacts the tips of its "teeth". As the conveyor belt moves, the comb roller rotates with it.
Self-cleaning function: As the comb roller rotates and the belt passes over it, the gaps between the discs cause sticky materials to fall off. The friction of the belt against the rotating combs also helps remove stubborn residue.
Rugged Construction: Given their role in handling return material, comb rollers feature a rugged shaft, sealed bearings and a sturdy frame to withstand abrasive materials and continuous operation.
